Perry Women's Club (Perry, Iowa)

 Organization

Biography

The Perry Women’s Club was organized in March 1926 by two women, Laura Reid and Ruie McCammon. Meetings were held in the public library basement until World War II when the room was given to the Red Cross. The club’s first project was to create a rest room for women shoppers in downtown Perry, Iowa. The club’s goal was to have a broader scope than other women’s clubs, according to the first president Laura Reid. The club was thus divided into four departments: Home and Education, Literature and Drama, History and Travel, and Music and Art. Each department hosted its own meetings and activities. The Perry Women’s Club also organized a women’s chorus. The Perry Women’s Club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1976.
