Biography

The Searchlight Study Club was organized in 1952 by women from Lee County, Iowa and federated with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1953. There were 11 founding members in 1952. As of 2019, there were 19 active members and more than 90 members across its history. The club met monthly for book reports, museum visits, talks from community members on a wide range of topics from medicine to world history, and for an annual Christmas social event in December. “The object of this organization,” their constitution and by-laws state, “shall be to stimulate and train its members for participation in intellectual, cultural, and civic affairs. Social events often had elaborate themes and menus highlighting a certain time period or a literary work, such as The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
