Boerner

 Family

Biography

Emil Louis Boerner was born in Prussia and came to Iowa when he was twelve. After graduating from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, he opened a drug store in Iowa City, which remained in operation for 57 years. He was involved in the organization of the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association, the Iowa College of Pharmacy in Des Moines, and the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa in Iowa City where, in 1885, he taught the first class. He also served as the first Dean of the College.

He went into the cosmetic and light pharmaceutical manufacturing business with William A. Fry. They had a factor built at 332 E. Washington Street, which still stands. Carolyn and Anna are presumably descendents of Emil Boerner.
