Maximiliana Ou L'Exercice Illegal de l'Astronomie [Facsimile] / Ernst, Max; Iliazd; Tempel, Ernst Guillaume., 2008
This book is a masterpiece of collaboration between an artist and an avant garde publisher-printer who created one of the most beautiful artist books of the twentieth century. The original is signicantly larger than this facsimile that was also sponsored by the Iliazd club. The accompanying book is a catalogue of Ernst's visual artworks as well as a provider of documentary material for Maximilliana. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
Maximilliana by Peter Schamoni / Ernst, Max ; Iliazd., 1974
The technique of collage is the systematic exploitation of the accidental or artificially provoked confrontation of two or more alien realities on an unfamiliar plane - and the flash of poetry which results from their mutual approach. [Werner Spies]. The Sackner Archive holds "Maximiliana" published in 1964 in collaboration with Iliazd. Influenced by a little known astronomer, Ernst Tempel, the work is acknowledged to be Max Ernst's graphic masterpiece. Schamoni subsequently made a film documenting the making of "Maximiliana" which was entitled "The Illegal Practice of Astronomy." This densly illustrated book depicts photographs of Ernst and his works including Maximilliana as well as various statements made by him regarding his personal philosophy and artistic ideas. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
