The 10 poets in this anthology each contributed three prints. Harmut Kruger made a three dimensional alphabet that has been drawn to form the exterior surface of a dwelling. Some of the prints appear to have been made from letraset collages & others by distortions of typefaces in a photocopying machine. In general, these black & white prints emphasize the three dimensionality of letters. This book, that has over 2000 well-selected black and white and color illustrations, is divided into three sections. The When section starts in the present and works back to the origins of writing. The Who section names, in alphabetical order, people and institutions that have contributed to typography as designers and inventors, teachers and calligraphers, entrepreneurs and theorists, publishers and artists, and schools and archives.
