Biography

The Imogene Hub, whose tagline reads "the hub of the universe," was edited and published by Veronica Keasling. In an effort to encourage recipients to open and read billing statements, the paper began in 1981 as a monthly newsletter to accompany bill statements. Residents of Imogene receiving the Imogene Hub newsletter with their bills began to seek out the paper in other venues around town and eventually the popularity of the publication grew to accommodate a subscription service list of 1,000 and a stock list of vendors in Imogene and its surrounding towns. What began as a one page mimeographed letter sized sheet developed into a tabloid. The paper is comprised of mostly humorous and sometimes serious anecdotes and reports about the people and happenings in Imogene, Iowa. Columns written by different townspeople appear in occasional issues though most stories were gathered and written by Keasling herself. In addition to having the support of local residents, who reported their own daily humorous stories to Keasling, advertisements for local businesses were a prominent portion of each publication and represented a wide variety of local sponsors for the newsletter.
