Smith states in an interview with Alan Bowness that his paintings "can be thought of as visual poetry, but they are not to be confused with concrete poetry. It is essential that my paintings are only visually understood. They are sound scores concerned with harmonies, discords and pauses...I seem now to be able to build up a visual written language that can deal with any experience of sensation.
