This book is heavily oriented toward ancient handwritten shaped poems. Peignot includes poems from ancient times to the present, There are also sections on Islamic, Hebraic and Chinese shaped poems. Several pages of Hrabaus Maurus poems are reproduced on page 46; the Sackner Archive holds a copy of this book. Page 51 depicts a battle formation formed from letters written by Nicholas Machievelli in 'The Art of War.' Page 91 depicts a page of shaped poems attibuted to an unidentified poet i Journal universel No.288, 1861. The Sackner Archive holds the same text in Journal Amusant, No.288,1861. Le Petit Peignot: Dictionnaire de Mots-Images, 1996
Peignot provides examples of word-images along with comments in an alphabetic listing. He uses alterations of letter spacing and boldness of the Futura typeface, repetition of letters, anagraphic presentation, variations in the arrangement of letters, mirror imaging, and punctuation marks to enhance and visually define the meaning of words. The poems are related to those found in another book published by Peignot in the same year, Toutes les Pommes se Croquent. Peignot provides examples of picture poems using concrete poems as the image with captions underneath, one to a page. The concrete poems are composed by varying letter spacing, alterating boldness of the typeface, mixing typefaces, repeating letters, printing anagrams, presenting different arrangement of letters, mirror imaging, and adding punctuation marks. It includes major sections of the works dealing with relatively obscure practitioners of this field such as Guy de Cointet (conceptual text), Robert Fauconnet (typewriter poetry to illustrate a narrative), Martin Solomon (graphic design) and Chang Yee (ideograms). The illustrations accompanying this record are taken from Robert Fauconnet 's typewriter novel, Divertissement mecanographique (1961) no longer in print.
