Biography

Mavis Stoner was raised in western Iowa and graduated from high school in 1949. She attended the Swedish Hospital nursing program and worked at the Buena Vista County Hospital and Upper Des Moines Opportunity Office until she became the head of the Cherokee County Public Health Office in 1969. She and her husband, Richard lived in Peterson, Iowa and raised two children. After the sudden death of her husband in 1984, Stoner drew upon her grieving experiences to create workshops on surviving widowhood. She began offering the stress-reducing presentation "Laughteris Magic" to groups around the Midwest. She continued to broaden the variety of holistic approaches used by of public health nurses and in 1992received the Iowa Public Health Association Thelma Luther Award for her service in public health. After her retirement in 1994, she continued to give presentations and to be active in community and church organizations.
