Biography
Sally Stutsman was born in 1946 in Fort Dodge, where she attended high school and community college before earning a bachelors degree from Iowa State. She and her husband Roger operated a farm west of Hills, and Stutsman also served as a social worker and child care services director for the state and Johnson County. In 1994, she was elected to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, serving five terms, before running successfully for the Iowa House. A Democrat, Stutsman represented District 77 (parts of Johnson County) from 2013-2017.
As a former legislator herself, Stutsman was recruited to interview several other women who had served at the statehosue for the Hard Won, Not Done oral history of Iowa Women legislators (IWA 1278). That project was organized by board members of 50/50 in 2020, a group dedicated to equalizing gender representation in elected offices in Iowa.
