Biography
Rachel Cole grew up in Newton, Iowa. As the daughter of a home economics teacher, Cole imagined she would become a teacher as well. However, she was fascinated by the mechanics of human movement, an interest which led her to neuroscience. Cole attended Knox College in Illinois where she majored in neuroscience and psychology and participated in a semester abroad in Denmark. After graduating from Knox College, Cole matriculated to the University of Iowa where she pursued a PhD in neuroscience. While there, Cole studied cognitive neuroscience, served as president of the University’s chapter of Graduate Women in Science, and worked on campus on a Zumba instructor. She also married her husband, Michael. After receiving a PhD in 2021, Cole remained at the University of Iowa as a postdoctoral researcher for 5 years before leaving to join the staff of the University of Minnesota’s Neuromodulation Research Center. She also fulfilled her original dream of teaching through adjunct faculty positions at St. Olaf College and the University of St. Thomas.
