Thi, Lan Ahn Kim

 Person

Biography

Thi Lan Ahn Kim was born in a rural area of northern Vietnam. The wars in Vietnam during the 20th century had placed a cultural expectation on women that they sacrifice individual autonomy for the sake of familial cohesion. Ahn received her primary and secondary education in Vietnam and completed her undergraduate degree in Japanese language and culture from a Japanese university. During her studies, Ahn worked in Osaka as a translator for two years. Following the completion of her degree, she returned to Vietnam and married her husband. The couple moved to Iowa City where her husband was completing his PhD at the University of Iowa. In between her GRE studies and graduate school search, Ahn would write to her friend and fellow Vietnamese feminist, Khanh, on matters of feminism and Buddhism
