Biography
Vo Van Khanh, also known as Claudia Vo, was born in Vietnam in the mid-1990s. Although it was frowned upon in Vietnam, Vo’s mother fled an abusive marriage and divorced her father when Vo was three years old. Vo and her twin sister spent much of their childhoods living with extended family members. As a child living with her grandmother, Vo was repeatedly molested by a neighbor. Due to cultural norms and a lack of sex education, she felt unable to talk to her grandmother about it, but eventually confided in the neighbor’s wife, which put a stop to the assaults. Vo studied Japanese at Hanoi University, planning on a career as a teacher or translator. Thanks to her fluency in Japanese, she pursued an additional graduate degree in family sociology at a Japanese University. There, she learned about feminism from a sociology professor. Vo developed a strong identity as a feminist, which was reflected in her work studying the family dynamics of Vietnamese women who marry Japanese men.
