Biography
Janet Metcalf, legislator, was born in 1935 in Des Moines to Frank and Manda De Puydt. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1954, she attended Grinnell College and in 1958 graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. That same year, she married Donald B. Metcalf. Metcalf worked as a small retail business owner from 1965-1983. In 1985, she ran successfully for the Iowa House of Representatives. During her nine terms in the Iowa House of Representatives, she served as chair of the Commerce and Regulation, State Government, Administrative Rules Review committees, as well as the Economic Development Appropriation Sub-committee. She also served as co-chair of the Iowa Women’s Political Caucus (IWPC). In 2010 Metcalf was elected chairperson of the Broadlawns Medical Center board, of which she had been a member the previous six years.
