Biography

Norma Jennish Yerkes was born August 5, 1901 to William and Jennie Hering Jennish in Waterloo, Iowa. She was raised in Waterloo and graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1919. After graduation, Yerkes was employed as a bookkeeper by the Commercial Bank in Waterloo and later Merchants National Bank in Cedar Rapids. Norma married Harland Yerkes of Vinton, Iowa on December 25, 1921. Norma Yerkes served as president of the Women's Club, a member of the Order of Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary. Norma Yerkes also had several additional hobbies and interests. Perhaps most notably, Norma Yerkes was an avid rock collector with over 500 rocks and stones displayed in her home.

Norma and Harland' had three children, Catherine, Russell, and Dr. Raymond Yerkes. Russell was killed in the Philippines in 1952 during the Korean War, which is recounted in the letters. Norma Yerkes died on November 3, 1978.
