 Person

Biography

Rural school teacher and farm wife Jessie M. Buthmann Meyer was born in 1902 to Hans Joachim Heinrich (Henry) and Marie Amalie Helene Jessen Buthmann in Irwin, Iowa. Both parents emigrated from Germany to farm in the United States. Buthmann graduated from Irwin High School and went on to earn a teaching certificate with the Iowa State Teachers College. After two years of teaching at Pleasant Hill School in Arcadia, Iowa, in 1923 Buthmann married William Carl Meyer and could no longer hold a teaching position in Iowa due to her marital status. Meyer and her husband moved to Irwin, Iowa, to farm and had three children: Evelyn, Berthelene, and William, Jr. In 1948, Meyer and her family moved to Lake View, Iowa, where they farmed for twenty years. Then in 1968, they sold the farm and moved into town. Meyer later lived with her daughter Berthelene in Maryland from 1975 until her death in 1987.
