This word means a short fore-and-aft beam running beside a hatchway, mast hole or other deck opening to support the inner ends of the partial deck beams in way of the opening. One page has a poem by Hoderlin translated by Harry Gilonis, opposite a photograph of a contemplative Finlay, sitting on a bench in the garden just outside his house, The poem reads, "At peace the ploughman sits outside his cottage in the shade...
