The item appears to be an unnumbered part of Katz' BBB (Beatrice's Black Book) series, so it might be considered tangetial, unofficial, or supplemental. The item is also three-dimensional, the "language" written out on crafted tiles that mimic those found in a word puzzle or game, in contrast to the usual use of paper collages for most of the series.

As with the rest of BBB, this item seems to have been created for Katz' film, Mirror on the Moon (1992).

Katz likely referred to the St. Cyr Rule resulting from the case of Immigration and Naturalization Service v. St. Cyr (2001).

Burnt Book is dedicated to the memory of the uncountable codices burned by Friar Diego de Landa, in Mani, Yucatán in June 1562, as part of a series of autos-da-fé carried out under his orders. In Account of the Affairs of Yucatán, a document written in part as a brief to defend himself before the Council of Indies, de Landa recounts: "These people [the Maya] also used certain glyphs or letters in which they wrote down their ancient history and sciences in their books; and by means of these letters and figures and by certain marks contained in them, they could read about their affairs and taught others to read about them too. We found a great number of these books in Indian characters and because they contained nothing but superstition and the Devil's falsehoods, we burned them all; and this they felt most bitterly and it caused them great grief." Burnt Book, made five hundred years after the first voyage of Columbus...

This book was a gift on the occasion of Leandro Katz's visit to the Sackner Archive. It contains three essays by Ana Longoni, Jesse Lerner and Mariano Mestman following the career of the artist, filmmaker and writer from the 1960's, his travels throughout Latin America as editor and experimental poet and his four decades living in New York.
