24th & 4th is an address in NYC where Lax observed life from a window in the 1950's. The poem, set in a more conventional style than Lax's characteristic poems, was first published under a pseudonym, Peter Lewis in 1958. The title is the address of the office building in New York City from which Lax observed the cityscape that inspired these poems. A vertical format to the poems layout is seen in these early poems (c.1958) which becomes more fully developed in his later sparer, more meditative poems.
