This book consists of 72 essays or partial essays of established writers, poets and philosphers. Also included are five texts relating to perspectives of Pettibon by contemporary writers and critics. Pettibon's drawings that are dispersed throughout the texts, are described as "disjunctive, and all inclusive...His initial style relied on the carefully acquired tricks and conventions of cartoon illustration...Pettibon's genius rests on the mysterious alchemy of image and text that his drawings effect. His is a poetry that defies verbal of visual categories, but relies on effacing th boundaries of each." This book is a catalogue raisonne of Pettibon's artists books produced between 1978 and 1998; it reprints over 100 of Pettibon's publications of original edition sizes ranging from 80 to 150 copies. This book was reproduced from a sketchbook of Pettibon that dates from 1986-1987 as evidenced by some of the pages that reproduce dated school notes on the verso of the drawings. Dennis Cooper provided an interview of Pettibon and Robert Storr contributed a survey of the artist's work titled "You Are What You Read." Ulrich Loock focuses on a single work "Vavoom" in his essay.
