Published in conjunction with Afrika's 1995 exhibition at the Osterreichisches Museum fur angewandte Kunst in Vienna. The folded sheets, placed in the bound-in envelope, contain eight rebuses each. The soft cover book is also bound into the folder. The brown paper used throughout is reminiscent of the paper in Russian Avant Garde books from 1910-1930. This book describes and depicts the copper engraved work of Afrika. It serves as an introduction to Afrika's copper book of engraved rebuses that is held by the Sackner Archive. Scope and Contents This densely worked book presents the rebuses of Afrika that are a continuum of the "spheres of interimagery" in the Russian social structure as expressed in folkloric tradition and in the theories of Mayakovsky and by anonymous artists. " In Afrika's rebuses, one can read the colour, texture, heaviness, light, and sound reflectability of the material...Things return to life, become oxidized, and undergo different transformations...The rebus is surrounded by an ornament which gives them all the character of an icon or of a folk-art picture. A confessional ornament is laid upon well-developed communist symbols.
