This unnumbered copy includes reproductions of two calligrams by Apollinaire. This copy was owned by Saint-John Pearse and carries his initials near the title page as well as some marginalia. Saint-John Perse (also Saint-Leger Leger;[1] pseudonyms of Alexis Leger) (31 May 1887--20 September 1975) was a French poet-diplomat, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1960 "for the soaring flight and evocative imagery of his poetry." He was a major French diplomat from 1914 to 1940, after which he lived primarily in the United States until 1967. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

This anthology, with text by Massin, is divided into three main sections. The first section is a discussion of the letter itself, the letter as symbol and the history of letters. The next section contains figurative verse and calligrams, shaped poetry and prose throughout history. The final section of the book examines the use of letters in fine art and how the letter form has grown in importance throughout the history of art. The diverse illustrations are international in scope and range from early Christian prayer books and Gothic alphabets to contemporary works.The English edition of this book has not printed the appendices present in the original French edition. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

This exhibition was curated by Roberto Antolini for the Trento Biblioteca Comunale and the Bolzano Museum. He contributed one essay "Il Nuovo Libro Futurista" and with Melania Gazzotti a second one titled "Le Sperimentazioni delle Neoavanguardie Nella Seconda Meta del Novecento." A section of the catalogue contains illustrations of artists' books mainly from the 1970's. the last part of the catalogue consists of correspondence between Fedele Azari and Fortunato Depero.
