This exhibition originated from the Sackner Archive and was curated by the Sackners. It consisted of an introductory essay by Marvin Sackner and a classification system for the pages exhibited: 1) Hidden Meanings, 2) Cancelled, 3) Cut, Torn Crumpled, Perforated, 3) Fragmented, 4) Layered, 5) Sculptured, and 6) Sewn and Woven. Jane Willams, Curator of The Arts of the Book Collection at Yale University Library, wrote an introduction to the catalogue and included a personal note to the Sackners for their support. Johanna Drucker contributed an essay "Theatrical Spaces: The Books of Artist John Eric Broaddus." Renee Riese Hubert and Judd D. Hubert wrote "John Eric Broaddhus as a Fashioner of Books." Update - Asthma Therapy [Book 3], 1984
The source text is Update Proceedings, a symposium, held by Key Pharmaceuticals on their respiratory drug, "Theodur." One of three copies, all slightly different, were commissioned by Sackner. The other two were given as gifts to officers of the company. The book serves as a support onto which Broaddus placed his visual imagery with minimal attention directed to uncovering new verbal messages in the text. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
