Simon Ford provides a section on Definitions of Artist Books that includes a statement by Marvin Sackner from "The Altered Page" catalogue. Scope and Contents In an introductory essay, Stephen Bann writes that "artists like Willem Boshoff and Frederic Bruly Bouabre clearly demonstrate the fertility of language-based investigations on African soil: Boshoff prepared for his work with dictionaries by lengthy exercises in concrete poetry." Okwui Enwezor contributes an essay "Where, What, Who, When: A Few Notes on "African" Conceptualism." Bann adds that "Willem Boshoff's conceptual practice is an elaborate effort dedicated to the study of ignorance, that is, pushing to the point of dissolution the idea that the world is knowable. Imprisoned by South African authorities for his refusal to serve in the military (the micrographic work, Kleinpen I, was produced in prison as a way to maintain mental equilibrium)... Boshoff finds in obscure and obsolete words a way to construct a map that denies sight but empowers knowledge...His study of linguistics and Wittgensteinian philosophy led him to explore other ways of rendering words into pulsating...

Grolier Club Collects, The, 2002

The exhibition consisted of books, manuscripts and works on paper from the collection of Grolier Club members. "The Heart of A Humument" from the Sackner Archive was exhibited and illustrated in the catalogue. George Koppelman exhibited Charles Bukowski's "The Genius of the Crowd," Cleveland:7 Flowers Press, 1966 (hand printed and illustrated by da levy). He purchased it for less than $1.00 from Jim Lowell, Asphodel Book Shop at the time of publication. The colophon called for 103 copies but about 40 copies survived since the rest were destroyed by the Cleveland police. Marvin Sackner composed the poetry based on page 12 of "A Human Document" as a birthday tribute to Tom Phillips. He used a scanner, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator as software tools. Fiona Maddox, Phillips' wife, sent blank pages to his friends and will bind them into a book. The text reads, "To TP it was meant to be, a good book for men and women, who experience so much mature observation of good life between the two, FM TP a picture complete, a true representation of life." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
