Materials Specific Details

Papermaking alumni Lindsay Nakashima and Jocelyn Webb published an important article in the Summer 1999 (Vol. 14, No. 1) issue of Hand Papermaking Magazine titled “Tesuri-Kako-Ho: Japanese Hand-Burnished Watermarking.” In it, they explain the Japanese technique for burnishing a damp sheet of paper into an engraved plate to change the uniform thickness of the paper. The paper changes thickness, and therefore translucency, in response to the specific details in the plate. In addition to Japanese professionally made examples, Lindsay Nakashima’s own examples are included in this collection.
