Each photograph is stored in an individual envelope. Photographs are arranged in the collections overall by railroad name, and within that by engine or car number."P-#" refers to the box number. Some railroads appear in multiple boxes, in separate sequences. For example, there are Amtrak photographs in boxes P46-47, and then again in P348-349.

The method for finding a particular image is a multi-step process. One must go to the paper index, contained in the collection, and look for the name of the railroad in the index to the indexes. This will direct you to the book which contains the information for the railway one is interested in. This second index will tell one in which boxes the actual photograps reside.
