Biographical / Historical
Melvin Gingerich was born in Kalona, IA on January 29, 1902. Graduated from Goshen College in 1926 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1938. Dr. Gingerich worked as an archivist at the Mennonite Church Archives from 1947 to 1970. He was also the editor of the Mennonite Historical Bulletin from 1945 to 1970. Dr. Gingerich was a professor of history at Washington Junior College in IA 1930-1941, Bethel College in North Newton KS 1941-1947, lastly at Goshen College 1949-1955 and again in 1959-1961. Wrote various things about the Mennonite church including “Mennonites in Iowa” and “Mennonite Attire Through Four Centuries”. Dr. Gingerich passed on June 24, 1975 from a heart attack.
