Materials Specific Details
Peg and Dick Nichols lived in Olathe, Kansas, where Robert Tabor spent his winters. Dick was a chess partner of Tabors. Tabor, Dick Nichols and his wife Peg Nichols, apparently engaged in discussions of literature, politics, UFOs, and world affairs. These letters contain discussions about books Tabor has read and is recommending to the Nichols' or responding to suggestions from the Nichols'. They sent clippings to each other. Tabor's daughter was a librarian at the Oelwein Public Library, so there is a good deal of discussions of libraries. Tabor also belonged to a discussion group in Oelwein and sometimes tells the Nichols what they had discussed in recent meetings.
Tabor was commissioned to do a painting of James van Allen and met with him several times. Some of these meetings were to clarify what should be written on the blackboard in the background of the picture.
There is also some discussion of "Vendue" the picture that hung in the Roosevelt White House and disappared after Roosevelt left the White House.
The dates are taken from the envelopes because the letters themselves are not dated, for the most part.
