The book, written in several hands, is inscribed inside the upper cover: "Mary Chaytor's Book, Spenithorne [Spennithorne, York?] June 1804." A few entries are dated between 1823 and 1837. It is bound in contemporary parchment. This is a large collection of recipes for wines, soups, meat dishes, sweets, cheese, biscuits, cakes, tarts, jam, marmalade, lavender water, raspberry brandy, potted beef, artificial yeast, toothpowder, french polish, permanent ink, and various remedies or prescriptions.
