The book, written in several hands, is inscribed inside the upper cover: "Mary Chaytor's Book, Spenithorne [Spennithorne, York?] June 1804." A few entries are dated between 1823 and 1837. It is bound in contemporary parchment. This is a large collection of recipes for wines, soups, meat dishes, sweets, cheese, biscuits, cakes, tarts, jam, marmalade, lavender water, raspberry brandy, potted beef, artificial yeast, toothpowder, french polish, permanent ink, and various remedies or prescriptions. There are 520 pages of which 347 are written with 173 leaves, plus blanks. Bound in vellum. Watermaked 1799, with seated women, or with crown and "GR"
