Materials Specific Details

This cookbook from England is written in a commonplace book that was sold by J. Richmond, Book-binder, Stationer, & Bookseller, No 123 Jermyn Str., St. James, London. Some addresses from what looks to be a much later addition, laid in, suggest that it is from Yorkshire. The first date that appears in the book is 1846 so we may assume that the book began sometime before that date. The book contains many recipes, if one interprets “recipes” loosely. For example the first “recipe” in the book is instructions for making a bead purse. There follow recipes for cooking, preserving, medicine, and household products. Some recipes of interest are for making ink, furniture polish, boot blacking, how to mend china, recipes for treating cough, whooping cough, indigestion, hydrophobia, and many other complaints. Of special interest is this one, “A Cure for Cancer”: “Take cow dung and hogs lard. Put them into a frying pan and mix them well together. Put it between 2 linen rags & apply it to the part 2 or 3 times a day. The fresher the cow dung is the better.” Also laid in is a flyer advertising “Real Russian ox and reindeer tongues.” Oblong 8vo., original calf boards, with later calf spine, original metal clasp. Also includes instructions for a ice water pitcher, blotter paper, a page from an almanack from 1883, and other loose recipes and notes
