Materials Specific Details

The first recipe in this book is dated February 14, 1831. The book is a mixture of at least three hands and covers the decades between 1831 and 1906, with some recipes being dated in the 1850s and 1860s. It could be a multigenerational book with grandmother, mother, and daughter owning it in turn. In any case, it makes for interesting comparisons between the recipes of different generations. As is usual, this recipe book contains the expected food items (i.e. Pickled Walnuts, Rock Cakes, Sponge Cakes) but includes some unexpected items as well, including a Receipt for Cleaning Pictures, Ingredients for a Scent Jar, and Distemper in Dogs. Also included is Ms. V. Edward’s receipt for making champaign, starting with 50 pounds of grapes.
