Materials Specific Details

Cookery manuscript by an unknown writer, this book contains mostly sweets such as cakes and pies, but also contains other recipes, such as Picalilli, Chicken Salad, Spiced Peaches, two recipes for Wild Herb Medicine, and one for hard soap. Though there is no name, date or location written in the book, there is a clipping laid in that has on the reverse a schedule for the Boston & Albany Railroad dated November 22, 1885, which may provide a clue as to date and location. There are several seafood recipes (for oysters, lobster, and dried cod) which suggest a proximity to the ocean.

Physical Description

Bound in marbled paper covered boards, much worn. The spine is repaired with cloth tape. Page block is separated from covers, but repaired so pages are not loose from each other. In an archival paper folder laid in the covers.
