Abstract

This collection consists of comics that focus on the concept of "Afrofuturism," which exists at the intersection of imagination, technology, the future, and Black liberation. Included in this collection are series from Marvel and DC alongside the trailblazing Milestone Media, the first Black created and owned comic company. Milestone partnered with comic juggernaut DC in 1992. What is also important of note to this collection: Milestone and colorist Noelle Giddings developed "The Milestone 100 Color Process," which allowed for "sophisticated hand-painted coloring that authentically portrayed a full range of skin tones. The DC/Milestone series in this collection addresses topics such as, "colorism, teen pregnancy, police brutality, and racism." Materials from DC and Marvel in this collection feature writers and artists of color in addition to Black and brown superheroes.
