Scope and Contents

This collection comprises the literary papers of American novelist, writer, and professor Maureen McCoy. It's divided into four series, with miscellanious materials at the end. The NOVELS series contains final and early manuscripts of McCoy's full-length publications. OTHER WRITINGS contains her short stories and miscellanious works. The CORRESPONDENCE series covers her personal and professional correspondence with editors, agents, peers, and friends. TEACHING includes her work at Cornell University, alongside other higher education institutions and miscellanious instructional positions.

Biographical / Historical

Maureen was a full professor at Cornell University, where she taught in the English Department’s Program in Creative Writing, including the MFA fiction degree program and undergraduate writing and literature classes. She resided in Taos, New Mexico, enjoying hiking and biking in the high country. Maureen authored four novels: Junebug, Walking After Midnight, Summertime, and Divining Blood, set in various Midwestern locations. Her short fiction, essays, and monologues for actors were widely recognized. Her essay "Vickie's Pour House: A Soldier's Peace" was a finalist for a National Magazine Award. Maureen taught writing workshops at Cornell, the UNM Taos Summer Writers Conference, the Vermont MFA Program, and Kalamazoo College. She held a B.A. from the University of Denver and an M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers Workshop. Her accolades included the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, the Helen and Robert Appel Fellowship, and a James Michener Award.
