Scope and Contents

Correspondence of Nathan Leopold with Helen Williams of the University of Iowa Bureau of Correspondence Study concerning his distance education while an Illinois prison inmate. The Bureau saved his file, also containing Leopold's examination papers, of correspondence with Leopold and other prisoners and prison staff in Illinois and Iowa, eventually transferring it to the University of Iowa Archives. Correspondents include Moses Jung and Helen Williams.

Biographical / Historical

Nathan F. Leopold and Richard Loeb were convicted of kidnapping and murdering Robert Franks in Chicago, Illinois. Their defense attorney, Clarence Darrow, successfully avoided death sentences. Leopold was released in 1958.
