Biographical / Historical
Frank Josef "Babs" Cuhel attended the University of Iowa in the 20s, competing in football and track. He won the silver medal in the 400 metre hurdles in the 1928 Summer Olympics.
After graduation he worked as a business envoy for several Dutch companies with American business. He lived in multiple countries in Asia, eventually residing in Java, Indonesia when WWII began. He was hired as a war correspondent with Mutual Broadcasting Systems in Java until it fell and he made a daring escape.
Cuhel was killed in the crash of the "Yankee Clipper" in Lisbon, Portugal on February 22, 1943.
