Biographical / Historical
Clifford William Hesseltine (1917-1999), of Brighton, Iowa, received the Bachelor of Arts degree in botany from the University of Iowa on June 3, 1940, and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1950. He served as a research mycologist at Lederle Laboratories, now Pfizer. His family moved to Peoria, Illinois, during the years he researched soybean protein and fermented foods for the U. S. Department of Agriculture, from 1953 to 1983. As an authority on mycotoxins, soil fungi, fungus food, and industrial fermentations, his position took him to a dozen countries, including Japan. Among his many awards, the Society of Industrial Biology conferred its highest honor upon Dr. Hesseltine in August 1980 for his outstanding career in microbiology. The University of Iowa offers the Clifford W. Hesseltine Award in Biology to undergraduate honors students. Clifford and his wife, Harriet (Herm) Hesseltine, of Marshalltown, Iowa, had one son and three daughters.
