Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Marie Tener Havel papers date from 1931 to 1997 and measure 2.5 linear inches.  The papers consist primarily of biographical materials and writings by Havel.

The Biographical materials include educational information, appointment papers, affidavit of birth and family history and other papers for application to the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Correspondence consists primarily of job offers and letters to Havel upon her retirement, as well as accounts by Marie Tener and Marian Aspley of driving from Riverside, Iowa to Minneapolis in the Armistice Day blizzard of November 11, 1940. The "History of Memorial Windows in the Trinity United Methodist Church, Riverside, Iowa," (1994) written by Havel, provides brief histories of the families honored by the thirteen stained glass windows, including Tener's ancestors.

"Memories" (1997) is a memoir by Marie Tener Havel about her years as a nurse, notably those years spent as a field nurse in Missouri and at the University of Iowa Hospitals. The Newspaper clippings include her wedding announcement as well as articles about the University Hospitals and conferences she attended. The Speeches include Tener's "What others expect of you," given at the St. Luke's capping ceremony in 1958.

The Photographs (1931-1965) include Tener as a young nurse, as a field nurse in Missouri, at the University of Iowa, and with her husband.
