Scope and Contents
The papers date from 1936 to 2002 and measure 2 linear inches. The papers are arranged in two series: High school and University of Iowa.
The High school series consists of an autograph book McNall kept during her freshman and sophomore years, 1936 to 1938. The autograph book contains many fine examples of the sentimental poetry popular during that period.
The University of Iowa series makes up the bulk of the collection. There are numerous dance cards that McNall strung together and had draped over her dresser mirror as was the custom in those days. Also included in the series are several programs and brochures, including a pictorial pamphlet greeting "the members of the armed forces on our campus." There are two 1943 football schedules, one for the regular University of Iowa Hawkeye team and one for the Seahawks, the football team for the Navy Pre-flight School on campus. The two teams were scheduled to play one another on October 9, 1943. McNall's papers also include programs for two men's basketball games held in 1944.
Active in the Young Women's Christian Association (Y.W.C.A.) while attending the University of Iowa, McNall's papers include the 1944 Y.W.C.A. installation program, where McNall was credited for the piano selections. McNall's 1943 membership card is also preserved in the papers, along with a handwritten radio speech dated 1944 and entitled, "What the 'C' Means in Y.W.C.A." Three newspaper articles include an announcement of McNall's naming to the World Student Service Fund, a 1943 article "Sororities Pledge 204" and an article regarding "Campus Beauties" selected by the pre-flight cadets in campus.
