Scope and Contents

The Edith Sackett papers date from 1959 to 1975 and measure 2.5 linear inches. The papers are arranged in three series: Drake Parents of the Year, Iowa Mother of the Year, and Iowa Women's Hall of Fame. The collection includes many letters of recommendation for Iowa Mother of the Year and numerous newspaper clippings commemorating all three events in Sackett's life.

Biographical / Historical

Edith Sackett was born on June 9, 1901 to William C. and Elizabeth Rose Murphy. She earned a B.A. at Drake University and completed some advanced work at Northwestern University in speech. She married Wilber Sackett in 1927, lived in Spencer, Iowa, and taught English and speech for many years at Everly High School. The Sacketts were the Drake Parents of the Year in 1959, and Edith Sackett was the Iowa Mother of the Year in 1969. Sackett was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1984.
