Scope and Contents

The Velma Stuit scrapbooks date from 1934 to 1990 and measure 5 linear inches. Arranged chronologically, they reflect Stuit's involvement in numerous organizations. In addition to the organizations already listed, Stuit had an active role in the League of Women Voters, the Girl Scouts of America, the Iowa City branch of the Needlework Guild of America, the Red Cross sewing group, the Iowa City Woman's Club Flower show, the Cosmopolitan Club, and the advisory board of the Young Women's Christian Association.

These scrapbooks contain newspaper articles of organizational events, including histories of the following organizations: the University Club, the Newcomers Club, the International Wives Club, and the Iowa City branch of the Young Women's Christian Association. The scrapbooks include honors accorded Stuit and a four-page memoir written by Stuit which she presented as a program in 1970 to the International Wives Club. A separate folder contains photographs including ones of Minnette Doderer and Merle Fleming.

Biographical / Historical

Velma Pottorf Stuit was born on August 21, 1911 in Mason City, Illinois. She grew upon a farm, walking a mile and a half to country school. In 1933, Pottorf graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree to teach high school mathematics. Pottorf married Dewey B. Stuit in 1934. After brief stints in Northfield, Minnesota, and Lincoln, Nebraska, the Stuits came to Iowa City when Dewey Stuit took a position as Professor of Psychology with the University of Iowa. He served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, from 1949 to 1977. Velma Stuit became active in several women's organizations, serving as president of the University Club in 1952-1953 and president of the Iowa City branch of the American Association of University Women from 1967 to 1969. She is recognized for creating the Newcomers Club in 1938, a branch of the University Club created for spouses of new faculty members. Stuit is also recognized as co-organizer with Mrs. M.L. Huit of the International Wives Club in 1959.
