Scope and Contents

The University of Iowa Women’s Studies Department records date from 1938 to 2009 and measure 22.5 linear inches. The records are arranged in 10 series: History, Rockefeller Foundation Resident Fellowship Program, Administrative files, Faculty, Directories, Newsletters, Lecture Series, Publications, Reports, and Computer Disks.

History (1938-1998) contains information on the founding of Women’s Studies and UI publications related to the history of women.

Rockefeller Foundation Resident Fellowship Program (1988-1994) includes grant applications, correspondence, transcripts, and papers for the “Rural Women and Feminist Issues” conference held at UI.

Administrative files (1989-2009) contains meeting agendas, minutes, course fliers, and correspondence of the department faculty with each other and with various deans.

Faculty (1992-1993) contains the correspondence and papers of Elsa Chaney. These include a “Women in Development” retreat and correspondence in English and Spanish regarding her Latin American projects.

Directories (1991-1998) holds a scattered run of directories containing information about the professors who were affiliated with the Women’s Studies Department.

Newsletters (1981-2002) contains a scattered run of newsletters from the Women’s Studies Department. These newsletters have information about the monthly/bimonthly activities of the department as well as information about faculty, students, and alumni.

Lecture Series (1980-1991) includes a collection of fliers for the Women’s Studies lecturers.

Publications (1990-1998) contains an article from the UI Liberal Arts magazine, General Catalogues for Women’s Studies, and a brochure about PhDs in Women’s Studies.

Reports (1993) contains the Executive Summary of the Subcommittee on campus homophobia and Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Concerns.

Computer Disks (1992) includes thirteen disks about the Rockefeller Foundation Resident Fellowship Program and the West and Wolf Violence Against Women Project.

Biographical / Historical

The University of Iowa Women’s Studies Program was founded in 1974. It was one of the first women’s studies programs in the United States. Originally professors held joint appointments in the social sciences as well as the humanities. Women’s Studies achieved departmental status in 2000. In April 2010, Women’s Studies changed its name to the Department of Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies. In 2011 the department had sixteen faculty members with joint appointments and fifty-five affiliated faculty, and offered undergraduate major and minor degrees as well as a graduate certificate.
