Scope and Contents

The Linda Czuba Brigance papers consist of three series: Dissertation (1999), Research Files (1992-1999), and Publications (1990-1998).

The Dissertation series consists of Brigance’s 1999 dissertation: “Rhetoric, Reasoning, and Relevance: Theorizing Public Controversy,” in which she analyzed the rhetoric surrounding the 1992 Iowa Equal Rights Amendment referendum.

The Research Files series consist of materials Brigance used for her dissertation research. They include newspaper clippings, scholarly articles, and Iowa laws and legislation concerning the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The Research Files contain materials from the 1992 ERA referendum campaign such as pamphlets and bumper stickers, an ERA curriculum guide from the National Education Association, and a book entitled “The Complete Text of the Equal Rights Amendment, unabridged” in which each page features the complete text of the ERA. This series also contains ten transcripts of interviews Brigance conducted with people involved in the 1992 ERA campaign. The Phyllis Schlafly, Illiteracy: Its Consequences and Cure folder consists of printed material associated with an audiocassette of the same name.

The Publications series contains several issues of IoWoman, one 1990 TIME Magazine special issue on women, and an issue of Humanities with an article on women’s suffrage.
