Biographical / Historical

Alejandra (Hondo) Porrez was born in 1934 in Fort Madison, Iowa, to Mexican immigrant parents. Her father, Guadalupe Porrez, was born in 1907 in San Lorenzo in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, and came to the United States in the 1910s as a result of the social and economic upheaval caused my the Mexican Revolution (1910 - 1920).

Hondo Porrez graduated from Fort Madison High School and quickly found employment at the Burlington Ordnace plant. She married Angelo Lozano and stayed home to look after their three children until 1959 when she started a new job at the Sheaffer Pen Commpany in Fort Madison. She worked at Sheaffer Pen for the next thirty-three years, until her retirement in 1992.

Lozano joined the Fort Madison branch of the League of United Latin American Citizens - LULAC Council 304 - in 1976. She immediately became active in the organization, upholding its mission to "advance economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population in the United States." She held the elected position of Deputy Director for the state of Iowa as well as president of the Fort Madison council. Her work with LULAC involved her in raising money to support education scholarships for local Latino students by organizing fundraisers at the local LULAC club house. Lozano remained active in LULAC throughout her life.
