Scope and Contents

The Helen Caldicott Community School records contain five series: Administrative records (1980-1984), Classroom records (1984), Activities (1984), Photographs, and Artifacts.

The Administrative Records series (1980-1984) contains materials related to the formation and running of the Helen Caldicott Community School. It contains a profile of Dr. Helen Caldicott, application materials, library and meeting records, and student records.

The Classroom Records (1984) series contains classwork in various subjects. It includes a 1984 peace-themed calendar produced by the students.

The Activities series (1983-1984) includes scripts and programs from the student group CAN-DO’s (Children Acting for Nuclear Disarmament) play, “The Cricket in the Nuclear Bomb Patch.” It also includes flyers for a Children’s March and Lobby for Nuclear Disarmament, calls for peace, and an article by Dr. Helen Caldicott. Photographs and artifacts relating to the play are in the Photographs (1984) and Artifacts (1984) series.

The Photographs series (1984) includes photographs of a production of “The Cricket in the Nuclear Bomb Patch” and an album of other school activities within and outside the classroom.

The Artifacts series (1984) contains a mask, a tie-dyed t-shirt, and other costume pieces and props from the students’ play “The Cricket in the Nuclear Bomb Patch.”

Biographical / Historical

The Helen Caldicott Community School was an alternative school in Iowa City named for Dr. Helen Caldicott, an Australian physician who toured the United States advocating for nuclear disarmament. The school, located in a house on Bowery Street, served a small number of elementary-aged students in the early 1980s. In 1984, the school’s group CAN-DO (Children Acting for Nuclear Disarmament) produced a play entitled “The Cricket in the Nuclear Bomb Patch.”
