Scope and Contents

The Rachel Marshall papers date from 1857 to 2006 and measure 5 linear inches. They contain materials related to Rachel Marshall; her parents Joseph and Emma Marshall; and her paternal grandfather Thomas Marshall. The Rachel Marshall papers comprise five series: Biographical, Education, Correspondence, Financial, and Photographs.

The Biographical series has materials related to Rachel Marshall, her parents, and her paternal grandfather. These include her parents’ wedding guest book, memorial books for both of her parents, and her 2006 obituary. This series also contains a “Century Farm Award” given to Rachel Marshall by the Iowa Department of Agriculture to recognize the Marshall family for owning and operating their farm for 100 years.

The Education series contains Rachel Marshall’s high school diploma and the commencement programs for her graduation from Burlington Junior College in 1933 and the State University of Iowa in 1936 and 1954.

The Correspondence series is comprised mostly of letters to Marshall’s grandfather Thomas Marshall from the late 19th century. The series includes several personal letters from Thomas Marshall’s brother and several friends. Also included is one letter Rachel Marshall received in 1940 from a friend studying in Cairo, Egypt.

The Financial series comprises several of Thomas Marshall’s tax receipts and a John Deere farm account book from 1944.

The Photographs series comprises one photo album and several loose photographs. The album contains photographs of Marshall’s family, her childhood, and her time as an undergraduate student at the University of Iowa. The series also includes portraits of Rachel Marshall and two pictures and of her parents.

Biographical / Historical

Rachel Marshall was born near Morning Sun, Iowa in 1915 to Joseph and Emma Marshall. She grew up on the same farm that her grandfather Thomas Marshall purchased in 1876. Rachel Marshall graduated from Mediapolis High school in 1931, Burlington Junior College in 1933, and the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) in 1936. She later returned to the University of Iowa to earn a Master’s degree in home economics. Marshall taught home economics at Flower High School in Chicago. She died in 2006.
