Scope and Contents

Thee Etta Luella Call papers consist of a diary, dated from 1881-1882, measuring 0.25 linear inches. The diary is hand-written and is a photocopy of the original, which is housed in the Kossuth County Historical Museum. Call was taught by Sister Leonore, Sister Eugenie, and Sister Twin in this all-girl boarding school; the prescribed coursework included Rhetoric, Philosophy, Ancient History, Botany, Reading, and French. Etta Call wrote in the diary each day, recording activities, thoughts, loneliness, weather, scholarly accomplishments, and school gossip.

Biographical / Historical

Etta Call, a Protestant from Algona, Iowa, attended St. Mary's Academy in Notre Dame, Indiana, during her senior year, 1881-1882. She later married William K. Ferguson, a native of Malone, New York, and a graduate of Dartmouth College. They had one child, Arthur. Etta Call Ferguson was known for her meticulous housekeeping and her generosity in helping the sick and the troubled. She died at an early age.
