Scope and Contents

This memoir includes five essays written by women in a memoir writing group about their or their family members’ experiences during or after World War II. Janet Erickson of Davenport, Burlington, and Waterloo, Iowa, wrote about the war through the voice of her mother Geneva Peterson Hursey. Sara Sutton of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, wrote about her life in the aftermath of World War II. Elizabeth Clothier, lived on the German-occupied Channel Islands during World War II until she and her family were sent to Biberach Internment Camp in Wurtemburg, Bavaria. Rhonda Kekke of Minnesota writes about the war through the voice and experience of her father-in-law Harvey Kekke. Doris Houser of central Illinois writes about her experience as a child living during World War II.

Biographical / Historical

Elizabeth Clothier and several other women living in and around Iowa City were members of a memoir writing group in the 2010s. The women, born between 1936 and 1944, wrote about their experiences and the experiences of their families during World War II.
