Scope and Contents

The Jones County Rural Women’s Clubs records have four series: Happy Hour Club (1961-1999), Homecraft and Culture Club (1940-1950), Twentieth Century Club (1952-1998), and Wapsie Valley Club (1976).

The Happy Hour Club series consists of handmade annual club programs from 1961-1999. Each one includes a membership list, committee lists, and meeting activities.

The Homecraft and Culture Club series consists of one club program from 1950 and treasurer’s reports from 1940 and 1945.

The Twentieth Century Club series contains annual club programs from 1952-1998. Each program consists of a membership list, a schedule of activities for meetings, and basic information about the club. The series also contains materials related to Sara Jane Frazier, a long time Twentieth Century Club member and her husband, Robert, including their wedding announcement and several photographs. Additionally, this series has newspaper clippings, correspondence, and other materials related to club activities.

The Wapsie Valley Club series consists of materials from the club’s 30th year, 1976. The materials consist of a membership list, program schedule, and notes concerning the latter.

Biographical / Historical

The Jones County Rural Women’s Clubs records comprise of materials related to four women’s clubs: Happy Hour Club, Homecraft and Culture Club, Twentieth Century Club, and Wapsie Valley Club. Each of these clubs met regularly for refreshment and entertainment. These clubs produced annual programs that recorded the schedules for their meetings, membership lists, and in some cases included the motto and basic history of the group.

The Twentieth Century Club of Olin, Iowa represents the bulk of the collection. The club was founded in 1899 and federated in the Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1916. The Twentieth Century Club was a study club. Through the 20th century, it undertook activities for members and for the community such as supporting the local library.
