Scope and Contents

The papers date from 1921 to 1998 and measure 0.25 linear inches. They consists of photocopies of newspaper clippings and certifiactes that authenticate Dixie Cornell Gebhardt as the original designer of the Iowa state flag. The papers also include photocopies of original flag designs and Gebhardt's other accomplishments.

Biographical / Historical

Dixie Cornell Gebhardt was born in Knoxville, Iowa, in 1866. She was secretary of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Iowa during World War I and designed the flag for the state of Iowa. She worked for several years for the Red Cross and was active in the Democratic Party. She was heralded as "Iowa's Betsy Ross." She died in 1955.
